    Description
Decorated cross, about 7m high, on plinth with three stepped shoulders. The dedications for both wars are incised on the front of the plinth for the cross using Roman capitals. The cross sits on a stepped base with side piers and end blocks. The overall width is about 8m. Cast metal plaques on both end blocks give the names of those killed in WW1 and side piers give the names of those killed in WW2. The imagery on the cross is as follows: the head of the cross is carved on both sides with never ending interlaced rope ornaments representing "eternity". Front of the shaft is carved to represent the main trunk of a tree, with animals along its branches. At the bottom there are two leverets representing Belgium feeding peacefully among the roots; swooping down are two birds of prey (Germany and Austria). Two rats represent the horrors of war; squirrels with oak leaves and acorns represent the British Empire. Two owls represent the wisdom of God, and the whole is surmounted by the dove of peace.
