- (INSCRIPTION ON PAPER IN MOUNTED WOODEN FRAME NEXT TO HEADSTONE): THIS TOMBSTONE OF JAMES WYATT WHO FOUGHT AT/ WATERLOO WAS MOVED TO THIS POSITION IN/ THE CHURCH [THE SITE OF THE OLD NORTH DOOR]/ IN 1971 TO PREVENT FURTHER DETERIORATION OF/ THE INSCRIPTION. THIS ORIGINALLY READ:/ IN MEMORY OF JAMES WYATT OF /APPLEDORE WHO DIED JANUARY 12TH /1848 AGED 65 YEARS./ HE SERVED IN THE ROYAL STAFF CORPS/ 23 YEARS & WAS PRESENT IN ALL/ THE PENINSULAR CAMPAIGNS &/ AT THE FINAL VICTORY OF WATERLOO,/ & WAS DISCHARGED IN CONSEQUENCE/ OF THE DISBANDING OF THE COMPANY./ THIS STONE IS ERECTED AS A TRIBUTE/ OF RESPECT TO HIS MEMORY BY/ RICH.D. ASHBEE & WM. CHAMBERS./ WILLIAM CHAMBERS OF WOODCHURCH HAD EMPLOYED/ JAMES WYATT AS A MASTER BRICKLAYER.
