    Description
Sandstone Cenotaph similar in general appearance to the Westminster Cenotaph, the main features being a pylon mounted on a broad plinth, with shallow graduated steps towards the corniced top, which is surmounted by a triangular finial. The town's Arms are carved within a beribboned laurel wreath under a crown on the East and the West faces, with carved laurel festoons under the cornice and on the south and North faces. Black-painted iron bands encircle the pylon at its intersection with the plinth, which is set on three shallow steps within a raised paved area, with iron railings around the inside of the top step. The WW1 Dedication is on the West face, with the WW2 Dedication being on a black painted cast plaque beneath it on the plinth. Inscriptions on the other three faces were added when the memorial was removed to its present site in 1988. The inscriptions are incised and gilded. There are no Names on the Cenotaph - they are to be found in two Books of Remembrance in the Town Hall (WMR 2689).
