    THE FOURTH ARM OF DEFENCE/THIS STATUE IS DEDICATED TO THE MEN AND WOMEN WHO SERVED IN THE AUXILIARY FIRE SERVICE AND NATIONAL FIRE SERVICE DURING THE SECOND WORLD WAR. FOLLOWING THEIR EFFORTS DURING THE BLITZ OF OUR NATION'S MAJOR CITIES AND TOWNS THROUGHOUT THE WINTER OF 1940/41, THE PRIME MINISTER, WINSTON CHURCHILL, REFERRED TO THEM AS "THOSE HEROES WITH GRIMY FACES." LATER, IN A LETTER TO THE HOME SECRETARY ON 8 JANUARY 1945, HE SAID "...THEY ARE A GRAND LOT AND THEIR WORK MUST NEVER BE FORGOTTEN." THE HAMPSHIRE FIRE AND RESCUE SERVICE SALUTES THEM/THEY WILL NOT BE FORGOTTEN/SCULPTOR: LES JOHNSON/ 12TH AUGUST 1995
