    Description
    An ornamental fountain with basin in which stands a carved relief pillar depicting draped female figures with wreaths and palms. Pillar is surmounted by St George standing on orb. The orb features four dragon head water spouts. The fountain is placed in front of a long wall with 24 tablets and a small metal plaque bearing the names of fallen. The whole is set within a formal garden in which also stood two freestanding statues depicting children representing 'The Lamp of Mercy' and 'The Shield of Honour'.

    THESE ARE THEY WHO BEING PEACEABLE CITIZENS OF TODMORDEN AT/ THE CALL OF KING AND COUNTRY AND IN DEFENCE OF THEIR NATIVE LAND/ LEFT ALL THAT WAS DEAR TO THEM ENDURED HARDSHIP FACED DANGER AND/ FINALLY PASSED OUT OF THE SIGHT OF MAN BY THE PATH OF DUTY AND SELF SACRIFICE, GIVING UP THEIR OWN LIVES THAT OTHERS MIGHT LIVE IN FREEDOM/ THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE/ (Names)

    Maintenance History
    2014: two new statues, replicas of the ones stolen and carved by Gilbert Bayes, were reinstalled at their original place. A grant of £6,332 was offered by the Grants for War Memorials Scheme towards the total project cost of £12,665. 2008: stone flagging stolen from around the fountain. 1990s: reported that statues of lamp and shield have been stolen.
