General Lord Home unveiled Kirkwall war memorial on Wednesday, in presence of a gathering estimated at 3000. The memorial takes the form of a gateway to the western entrance to St Magnus Churchyard, and, like the cathedral under whose shadow stands, is Norman in character. Provost White introduced General Home, who said when in August, 1914, Germany forced war on the world and the call went out for those who were ready and able to do so to stand up in the defence of freedom, right, and liberty, the response of the men of Orkney was immediate. It was estimated that one in every twelve in Orkney served in one or other of the Forces of the Crown. That was a fine record. Whilst they honoured the 138 men of Kirkwall who fell, let them'not forget those whose pride was mingled with tears and mourned an irreparable loss. Whilst they thought of the dead, let them not forget the living who returned wounded, maimed, and broken. However unworthy they did their job was their business to do their best to help them might that grateful gateway of their venerable cathedral raised to the honour of men who did their duty inspire them all, come weal, come woe, to follow their example.
