    Description
    Stone platform accessible by steps with a large base and plaques surmounted by wide square column. WW2 plaques on railings around the memorial platform. Bronze wreath on each face near top. Bronze relief of mourning soldier, head bowed with upturned in front of two crossed flags.

    WW1- ON THE CENOTAPH ITSELF On the Stone of the Cenotaph-AD 1914-1919 On the Corners between the plaques are bronze panels depicting- SW Corner- A Soldier & the words PRO PATRIA SE Corner -Liberty NE Corner-An Angel and the words DEUS VOLENTE NW Corner- A Soldier and the words PRO REGE North Face-Upper Dedication Plaque- PRO DEO PRO PATRIA/TO THE GLORY OF GOD/AND IN THE HONOURED MEMORY OF THE MEN OF/BARROW-IN-FURNESS WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR/”They served for Liberty-for Life they died”/THIS PANEL WITH THE ROLL OF HONOUR TABLETS/WAS PROVIDED BY THE INHABITANTS OF THE BOROUGH North Face-Lower Dedication Plaque- TO THE MEN & WOMEN OF/BARROW IN FURNESS/WHO DIED/AS A RESULT OF ENEMY ACTION/1939-1945 Each of the three names plaques (South, east and west faces)-THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE/[names in 5 columns] WW2 Panels- on Panels 1, 2, 4 to 8 and 10 to 12 are just names in 2 columns Panels 3 & 9 both read: IN HONOURED MEMORY OF/ALL SERVICE PERSONNEL/OF THIS BOROUGH/WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/IN THE 1939-1945 WAR/ALSO KOREA AND CYPRUS CAMPAIGNS/HAVING MADE THE SUPREME SACRIFICE/THAT WE MIGHT LIVE/LEST WE FORGET [ note that KOREA AND CYPRUS NAMES ARE INTERMINGLED with the WW2 names; the FIGURE BELOW for WW2 therefore includes Korea and Cyprus, also on Panel 1 is 1 WW1 name]
