Alternate text
Alternate text should be a short-text description of what is depicted in the image. It is mandatory because it is widely used by people who use screen readers, and is crawled by search engines to show users relevant results.
Good alt text should :
- Be specific and not overly descriptive.
- Be concise, but describe what’s in your images accurately enough to understand their context. It is good practice to imagine you are describing a picture in a Tweet limited to just 280 characters.
- Stay clear of repetition.

Priority
This is the order the images will appear on the public-facing site. Try to choose a leading image which gives a good overview of the whole memorial.
Date taken
The date of the image is important to researchers, interested in the history and condition of the memorial.
Write the date in the IWM house style DD Month YYYY e.g. 12 March 2023
Caption
The image caption is published on the public-facing register. It is important for researchers to understand what's depicted in the image.
Make sure your caption is applicable to any images you are uploading and is consistent across them.
For images with similar appearances, use the caption to differentiate between them to describe what you are trying to highlight e.g. Dedication, Names A - M, Names M-Z
Publication
Click-use selected images to identify any images as suitable for use on the IWM website and those which contain evidence of inscribed names. These images will be pulled through to the public-facing register.
Copyright
The War Memorials Register is a collaborative project, so it is important we provide details of who took or provided images, the date taken (minimum year) and who the image should be credited to.
If you did not take the image, and you do not have this information or permission from the person who took the image, we cannot share it on the register.
Any images published on the IWM website are done so under IWM’s non-commercial license
Do not upload images found online, unless the copyright holder has made them available under a creative commons CC BY-NC Licence, which entitles you to share and use images in a non-commercial context, while providing credit to the original copyright holder in the manner they specify.
War Memorials Online publish images under a creative commons license, make sure to use the correct attribution (stated on their website) when re-using their images.
